Crafting challenging future scenarios

Sources

  • Shell was one of the pioneers in the use of scenario thinking in business and the website contains a large number of videos and practical documents on (developing) future scenarios. For instance, watch the videos 'Navigating an uncertain future' and 'Windows on the future: modelling scenarios' on this webpage. The latest Shell scenarios - called Waves, Islands and Sky 1.5 - on the energy transformation can be found here; the three scenarios all describe pathways to net zero emissions but differ in the speed with which this happens.

  • The persona approach is most often used to envision and look through the eyes of future consumers and users but is also helpful to imagine future scenario. Here you find a short article on creating and using personas in scenario building while a more extensive one on application in UX-design can be read here.

  • The article ‘Composing a plot for your scenario’ by Peter Schwartz is a classic on working out and writing scenario plots.

  • In this Venngage’s blog post you find examples, templates and design tips for creating infographics. A web search will help you to find specific examples for future scenario infographics. See, for example, this Pinterest page on (former) scenarios on the future of work or this infographic summarising two New Zealand energy scenarios. Shell has also summarised its latest set of energy transformation scenarios in an infographic.
